Genesys Opens New R&D Centre in Galway, Marking Latest Milestone for its Development in EMEA

The Taoiseach unveils new 35,000-square-foot development to support innovation

Galway, Oct. 14, 2022 — Today, An Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD officially opened a new R&D centre in Galway for Genesys®, a global cloud leader in customer experience orchestration. The sustainable, mixed-use facility is the new home for the experts developing its range of cloud solutions. It’s the largest Genesys R&D centre in Europe.

“I am delighted Genesys has chosen Galway as the location for their largest R&D site in Europe, which will help foster even more collaboration across the tech sector in the region,” said Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD.

“Ireland is extremely proud of our rich and collaborative research ecosystem; and of the role enterprise-led research, development and innovation plays in driving start-ups – and improving our overall competitiveness and productivity. Genesys is a major part of this success, and I wish them the very best in the years ahead,” he added.

Genesys established the centre in Galway following the 2018 acquisition of Altocloud, a local start-up. The region was quickly identified as a European hub for its software development activities.

Since then, Genesys has grown its Irish team from fewer than 20 to more than 350 employees. This led to the move to the new 35,000-square-foot waterside development at Bonham Quay in the historic heart of the city.

“We are developing the future of customer experience for many of the best-known companies around the world. The new centre in Galway is integral to this and brings a great environment for our teams to innovate.” said Tony Bates, CEO of Genesys. “Today is a double celebration as it also marks the opening of our new head office in Menlo Park in the San Francisco Bay area, which two Irish settlers named in 1851 after Menlough in Galway.”

In line with the company’s sustainability engagements, the new office meets the latest environmental standards. It also integrates a cultural space that’s open to community groups. The new office gives Genesys employees a responsible and enjoyable workplace – with leading sustainability credentials in the form of an application for LEED (Leadership and Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum standard.

“This world-class workplace in Bonham Quay will foster cloud innovation for our teams working on-site or remotely around the country,” said Joe Smyth, senior vice president R&D and Galway site lead at Genesys. “It also creates stimulating conditions for our employees and customers from all over the world, as well as community groups from the region – through events, workshops and charitable activities.”

This environment was recently recognised when Genesys became Ireland’s 7th best medium-sized workplace in Ireland for 2022*. Beyond the office, the company has also forged a strong role in the local community by employing interns and graduates from local universities and colleges. And it organises careers talks for computer science and engineering subjects in secondary schools. Genesys is also the Principal Partner of Connacht Rugby Club and supports many local amateur sports clubs – further strengthening its connection with the community.

“Since announcing in 2021 that Galway would be home to its largest R&D centre in Europe, Genesys has grown from strength to strength,” said Mary Buckley, IDA Ireland executive director. “Its presence in Galway enhances the West Region’s established tech cluster and Genesys ability to attract and retain talent demonstrates the region’s thriving and highly skilled workforce. I’d like to wish Joe and his team here in Galway continued success.”
